Intraosseous infusion (IO) provides a very effective means of delivering fluids and medications to compromised patients, where peripheral venous access has failed or is impractical. Spring-loaded or drill type IO needles, although extremely effective, are expensive. This is a challenge and for this reason, manual Yamashita type devices are still extremely popular across Africa.
